CABI Pig, the free-range pig farm building

The CABI Pig is similar to the original CABI, but designed for outdoor pig farming. It is a portable farm building for free-range pigs.

Its structure is the same as CABI Origin, with an iron frame and insulated sandwich panel cladding.

However, it is reinforced on the inside to prevent panel damage by pigs. CABI can also supply free-range pig tunnels. These are galvanised sheet metal shelters with an iron frame. They can be moved using the tractor’s 3-point linkage.

The ventilation system is designed to provide the best possible air circulation and shaded openings.

For optimum ventilation in buildings of more than 30m², the skylight element is strongly recommended. With this system, outside air enters through the windows, allowing heat to escape through the skylight. From the 80m² to 120m² models, 2 rooflights are recommended, and 3 for the 150m² cabin.

The pig’s welfare is guaranteed inside the building, even at the hottest times of year.

Ventilation

Partitions and extensions

Raise the building by 50cm for greater working comfort when cleaning the crawl space
Build it on a low wall (often 50cm) gives more height on the sides, as with the sandwich panel extension.
This option also makes it possible to clean the building with a small “BOBCAT”-style machine without damaging the structure. However, the hut will be fixed and cannot be moved.

What are the advantages of rearing pigs outdoors?

The advantages of rearing pigs outdoors include:

Better animal welfare: pigs have more space to move around and express their natural behaviour.
Meat quality: some farmers claim that the meat from free-range pigs is of better quality because of their more varied diet and physical exercise.
Reduced environmental impact: free-range systems have a lower environmental impact by allowing better waste management and encouraging crop rotation.

What size pigsty do I need when outdoor farming?

The size of your building will depend on the weight of your pigs. For pigs over 110kg we recommend you have 1 square metre per animal.

Should the pigsty be insulated or not?

Cold temperatures don’t affect pigs’ health. Pigs can very well be housed in tunnel-type sheds. However, the cold can cost you a lot in feed. You should therefore look for sheltered plots of land and equip your huts with a wooden floor and mulch over the winter. It is therefore preferable to have insulated pigsties.
